Queensland is moving from infrastructure planning into delivery. The Queensland Major Projects Pipeline Report puts the state’s program at $127.5 billion over the next five years, while major projects tied to the 2032 Olympics are progressing through procurement and design.

Infrastructure Australia’s 2025 Market Capacity Report forecasts shortages across engineers and architects to peak at around 126,000 nationally in late 2026, with demand for project management professionals continuing to rise into 2027. In Queensland, the Audit Office has also identified shortages in engineering and project management capability as a risk to major-project delivery, particularly for projects still in planning and early delivery.
With housing, transport, energy and Olympic programs progressing in parallel, practices are competing for the same pool of experienced technical professionals, limiting how quickly they can expand through local recruitment alone.
When those roles remain unfilled, senior architects and engineers are pulled further into production work, leaving less time for design leadership, coordination and client delivery.
What the Olympic pipeline demands
The 2032 venues program is not a single project. It spans 17 new and upgraded sporting venues, transport infrastructure across the state, athlete villages on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane and the civic and utility programs underpinning them.
